Long, meandering lines of kids filed out of their classrooms. Large eyes took in
every bit of their surroundings. Some were laden with backpacks, threatening to
topple them over. Stiff, unused straps precariously kept them in place. Almost
every child in sight had a name tag. All except her child.

Mom and dad are dead, Ritchie's got a broken arm and she's sneaking in
smokes. What's wrong with this picture?
In reality a million things have been running through her head. It also
helps take her mind off the unexpected rage she’d earlier experienced
when she was told by the hospital staff that she couldn’t see her parents’
bodies. Insurance claims,living expenses, transportation needs, taking
care of themselves, the minutiae of everyday life, etc, etc., that’s what
Natalie thought about instead. She isn’t old enough to legally care for
herself and Ritchie which means child protective services would have
to be called in.

From his perch by one of the windows Nick looks out into the late
afternoon sun. It's only an hour till sundown.This will be his last sunset
here. Tomorrow he leaves...alone. The room is fully packed. Crates and
boxes line the walls of the cavernous main room. Only the grand piano,
ignored for months now and out of tune, and the leather couch remain
where they've always been.

Natalie was the one who made the first move. She's tired of the details
in her life being determined by decision makers other than herself. She
hates that the no painting clause in her lease in non-negotiable. She
thought she'd get used to the orange accent wall in her apartment. She
thought wrong. She hates that the worldwide wildlife charity she'd been
donating money to for years is being investigated for misuse of funds.
And she hates that her favorite cereal is being discontinued. So she kisses
him and it's all together a very pleasant experience.
